I've always been a reader, for practically as long as I can remember, and a writer for nearly as long. However, my high school years were pretty unproductive, creatively speaking.
The next year I got a job at Mervyn's (remember Mervyn's?) in the shoe department. Which meant many long hours of mindlessly cleaning up and stacking boxes, leaving plenty of time for my mind to roam free and envision the story. Yes, I still managed to get all my work done. I'm quite the multitasker. :)
